Anyone is eligible to participate, although pre-season training can be rough…it is important for a chess player to be strong, fast, agile, flexible, mean, and have high endurance for pain. (Ok, maybe not.) Club begins in November (listen for the announcement) with practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Matches are held at various times with weekly, weekend, and league tournaments. The goal is to have fun. Competition is not the emphasis. Mr. Witherup is the chess coach and faculty moderator. The assistant coaches are Mr. Rick Beck (Class of 2001) and Mr. Dan Schultz (Class of 2003). The club sponsors Elder Chess teams at two levels, Varsity and the JV. The club also offers beginning player instruction. Mr. Witherup is currently a member of the Elder mathematics department. He serves as the defense coordinator and overall game strategist. He founded the Elder Chess Club in 1995 and strives for student enjoyment and appreciation of the game, good sportsmanship and of course a winning season. Panther Chess: Not for the faint hearted! Elder Chess Team 2002-2003 City Wide Champions! The Elder Varsity Chess Team, Black Division Leaders, Wins the Cincinnati Championship. Elder High School Chess Club is a member of the Greater Cincinnati Scholastic Chess League. Elder is in the Black Division which consists of Elder, Roger Bacon, St. Xavier, and St. Henry High Schools. Elder’s 4-1-1 record clinched the Division Title and gave the team the nod for the League Playoffs. After the Elder Board Warriors defeated Maderia High School in the playoffs, they played Deer Park, Red Division leaders. This game ended in a tie, which threw the title game into overtime. The overtime period consisted of a 10-minute game. Dan Schultz won this game and secured the Championship Title for Elder.
